Stay Active While Social Distancing: Best Free Fitness Apps

Social distancing has interrupted daily life in many ways, but I’ve found that it has been really impacting my regular health and fitness routines. I’ve been working from home as a part of TextNow’s efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, and now that I’m so much closer to my kitchen I end up eating more snacks every day, but I’m also walking less and laying on the couch more. It’s a slippery slope.

For that reason I’ve been searching for ways to stay active and mentally strong during this time of self-isolation. Below I’ve shared some of the best fitness apps I’ve found, but you can also stay tuned for some great mental health resources as well!

Fit On app — Available free for Android and iOS

The Fit On app offers a variety of different workout options that are suitable for people of all experience levels. They offer a variety of bodyweight workouts, which I find to be perfect while at home without all of the usual gym equipment. However, if you happen to have some dumbbells laying around that you want to use, they’ve got some options for you too!

Bonus: Fit On recently introduced a whole collection of workouts that are kid-friendly! I love this option for the parents out there that are looking for ways to not only get active themselves, but also to keep their kids active and entertained through the day.

Nike Training Club app — Available free for Android and iOS

Nike Training club is another great workout app that offers a wide variety of workout options. It can be tailored towards your own personal goals and the resources you have available at home. If you’re not really in the mood for a full workout, Nike offers mobility sessions which are a great option to get you off the couch for a few minutes to stretch. Believe me, by the end of this recommended quarantine you’ll be happy you took a few minutes to stretch those quads!

Bonus: Nike Training Club has a premium option for $14.99/month to unlock exclusive workout options. Word on the street is they’re offering this premium service for FREE during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you’re interested, now would be a great time to test it out!

Zombie’s, Run! — Available free for Android and iOS

I totally understand if staying inside to workout is not super appealing, so how about getting some fresh air? Zombie’s, Run! is a unique running app that uses various storylines to keep you moving. Better keep running if you don’t want to be eaten by zombies…. or break social distancing protocols!

Fitness Blender

Okay, so this recommendation isn’t technically an app, but I had to mention it anyways! Fitness Blender is available through a browser at www.fitnessblender.com or on their YouTube channel. All of the videos are completely free and the workouts have a wide range of difficulties and lengths. Everything from a quick 8 minute breathing session to a full one-hour body workout is available for you. For free. Anytime.

Even if you aren't a dedicated gym-goer, it’s important to remember to get some exercise while self-isolating. I hope that you’ll be able to take advantage of some of these free services to get you through this time.
