5 Asian and Pacific Islander-American Contributors to STEM

The contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are, somewhat ironically, incalculable. Asian Americans have been involved in American scientific discoveries and breakthroughs ever since America became a country. From nuclear power, to the internet, to birth control, to politics and black holes, Asian and Pacific Islanders have been involved in the greatest American advances in STEM. So for this year's Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we've put together just a tiny slice of the thousands of contributors throughout the years:

Chien-Shiung Wu (1912 – 1997)

Asian American Heritage Month

AKA “First Lady of Physics” Chien-Shiung Wu was a particle and experimental physicist, whose work helped prove the existence of quantum entanglement. In 1944 she was famously recruited by Enrico Fermi to join the Manhattan Project to work on the first practical nuclear reactor ever built.

Jerry Yang (b.1968)

Steven Chu (b.1958)

Asian American Heritage Month

Nobel laureate in Physics in 1997 for research on cooling and trapping atoms using laser light,  and the 12th United States Secretary of Energy.

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, (b.1983)

Asian American Heritage Month
